Taking place in the roaring 1920s, Wild Party concerns a blowout party in one wild evening in the Manhattan apartment shared by two vaudeville performers, Queenie and Burrs. To spice up their already rocky relationship, they decide to throw the party of the decade. Guests include a lesbian, a thug, a dimwit, an underaged seductress, and a dancer. Queenie soon falls in love with one of the guests – the handsome Mr. Black. Burrs becomes insatiably jealous and violence ensues between him and Mr. Black. Mr. Black ends up shooting Burrs dead and flees the scene. In the end, Queenie has lost both men and her life is a wreck.

As Bees in Honey Drown is a comedy about the quest for fame and stardom. But wanting the spot light is not as good as it seems. Eager painters, singers, musicians, business managers, and authors are displayed as trapped victims of many con artists who give them empty promises. The story centers on Evan Wyler, a hot new writer who has recently burst onto the New York literary scene. He falls head over heels for Alexa Vere de Vere: a glamorous, jet setting, mystery-cloaked woman at the top of the media biz and the celebrity a lists. But who is Alexa Vere de Vere really and what is her game? This thought provoking assessment of our image-over-substance society cuts to the quick as well as entertains. A regional premiere!

A Sacramento Premiere! An enthralling and ultimately chilling black comedy that confronts bureaucratic euphemisms like "person of interest" and "extraordinary rendition" with the frightening reality they seek to obscure. Following a heinous terrorist attack, an Arab-American writer is visited by two government officials. What begins as a friendly inquiry soon devolves into a full-blown investigation of his presumed ties to terrorists. At times surreal and comic, Back of the Throat examines the way in which facts, evidence and (mis)perceptions are used to distort the truth and how racial profiling impacts the relationship between the accusers and the accused.

This perennial favorite is based on the haunting folk ballad of "Barbara Allen." Employing a large cast and imaginative settings in the Smoky Mountains, it recounts the story of John, a strange "witch boy" who upon first beholding the beautiful Barbara Allen immediately falls in love. He is given human form to woo and marry her on the condition that she remain true to him. The marriage is consummated and Barbara gives birth to a witch child whom the townspeople destroy in a superstitious frenzy. During a religious revival Barbara is led to betray John thus breaking their spell of love. As she dies, he returns forever to the world of the mountain witches.

The Sacramento Theatre Company is committed to presenting August Wilson’s groundbreaking ten-play Pittsburgh Cycle, chronicling the African-American experience through each decade of the 1900s, beginning with Gem of the Ocean. When Citizen Barlow, in spiritual turmoil, arrives at Aunt Ester’s house claiming sanctuary from Caesar, the local constable, he sets into motion a series of events, including a journey to the City of Bones, which leads to startling discoveries and sets him on a course where duty leads to redemption. Wilson brings to the table a rare humanistic and lyrical insight in the American quest to forge one nation, indivisible, with freedom for all.

Power, sex, ambition, greed... another day at the office! From the authors of Guys and Dolls comes one of the most delightfully irreverent musicals of all times. A satire of big business and all it holds sacred, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying follows the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch who uses a little handbook as his guide to climb the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to CEO, tackling such familiar but potent dangers as the aggressively compliant "companyman", the boss' whiney, nepotistic nephew, the office party, backstabbing co-workers, caffeine addition and, of course, true love!

The Pastorela is the traditional Mexican Christmas nativity play that tells the story of a group of shepherds visited by angels. The angels tell the shepherds about the birth of the Christ Child and ask them to take the journey to Bethlehem. As the shepherds journey to Bethlehem, all hell literally breaks loose, and chaos ensues. There's temptation and deceit, lost love and requital, mighty battles, modern dance grooves and outrageous humor as angels and devils try to convince the audience to join their ranks. Although much of the dialogue in La Pastorela is in Spanish the message is clear: it's all about truth, forgiveness and love.

Director: Ray Tatar
California Stage takes a classic masterpiece of ironic substance and style, plays it for you in the original with powdered wigs and comic gentility and then translates it with the manners and mores of a later era, equally as stylish and ironic. Ray Tatar's resetting of Molière's Them Precious Little Ladies to the Paris of 1890 Texas provides for a great evening of pure enchantment.
The first of Molière's plays to be presented at the Petit Bourbon was Les Précieuses Ridicules which satirized Madame de Rambouillet, a member of the King's court who had set herself up as the final judge of taste and culture in Paris. The play proved so successful that Molière doubled the price of admission and was invited to give a special performance for the King. The King was delighted and rewarded the playwright with a large gift of cash.
Les Précieuses Ridicules poked fun at the limited education that was given to daughters of rich families, and reflected the Molière's own marriage. Writer-director Tatar says, "The play easily adapts to Paris, Texas because the comic themes are universal." The young ladies of the play are pretentious country girls who are trying to act out what they think are urbane manners. All the characters were conceived in the French classic tradition, and like Shakespeare's individuals, are archetypes. Molière's' fiery lovers, braggart captains, misanthropes, snooty servants, and angry fathers are filled with deeply felt passions and ideas that somehow ring true for all ages. This play runs January 16 to February 15, 2009, stars James Anderson. You see this short play in French and English in one evening.

Little Women follows the lives of 4 sisters in Massachusetts from the height of the American Civil War in 1863 to 1868. Adapted from the cherished novel by Louisa May Alcott. The reading public has understood for many years what the critics have not - Little Women is an authentic and substantial memoir about the joys and pains of growing up. Long maligned by critics as a "treacley girls' book," Alcott's masterpiece is finally beginning to receive the attention it deserves as a true American classic. Alcott's story is a very human piece of art. It is not structured around large issues of international importance or deadly intrigue. It is instead a carefully pieced mosaic of all the important people and moments that mold and make a life. It speaks to all who read it because it speaks with the voice of truth, shaped by the tones of experience.

It took George Bernard Shaw eight years to get this brilliant, controversial play produced. In his famous "apology" for the script Shaw describes the "hysterical tumult of protest, of moral panic, of involuntary and frantic confession of sin" that ensued. This controversial attack on society's hypocrisy involves young Vivie Warren, emancipated, intelligent and self sufficient. Vivie is astounded to learn her mother rose from poverty to riches through prostitution - -and also that she is now part owner and operator of a chain of brothels.
Featuring Janis Stevens as Mrs. Warren.
